Colossians 1:9-10. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing…
Notice how Paul begins this prayer. He says that he does not cease to pray and to ask on behalf of the Colossians. When you pray for something without ceasing, it’s important to you!
Why does he say “pray and ask”? What’s the difference between “praying” and “asking”? Not much! That expression is simply emphatic. It signifies the intensity of Paul’s conviction that that for which he was praying was vital!
And what is he praying for? He is praying that the Colossians will be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Why? What’s the purpose of this prayer? What does Paul intend to accomplish in the lives of the Colossian believers by praying this way? Simply this: that they would walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him.
That’s something that all sincere Christians desire: to walk worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in every aspect of our lives. But that sounds like a tall order, doesn’t it? Who, except for the Lord Jesus, ever pleased God in every aspect of his or her life? Is that even possible for us?
It must be, or else Paul would not have prayed that way! Becoming filled with the knowledge of God’s will is what causes you to walk worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in all respects!
